EMERGING OIL PAINTER MG’S FIRST SOLO SHOW IN U.S. AT BURNING
BUTTERFLY GALLERY
Union City, NJ, June 5, 2003 – MG has her first solo exhibition
in the United States as Burning Butterfly Gallery’s inaugural
show. The opening reception will be held June 5, 2003 from 7pm to
11pm at 1616 Manhattan Avenue, Union City, New Jersey. The exhibition
is a mini-retrospective of MG’s work, including 12 oil paintings
completed in the last 4 years. Beginning with work from before M’s
first solo show in Guadalajara through work recently completed in
her Brooklyn studio, these pieces reflect the artist’s eclectic
and unique style.
Most recently MG’s ‘Tile 4 (orange)’ was selected
by Anne Umland, Associate Curator of the Department of Painting
& Sculpture of the Museum of Modern Art New York, to be included
in Pleiades Gallery of Contemporary Art’s 21st Annual Juried
Exhibition (June 25 – July 12, 2003, Pleiades Gallery, 530
West 25th Street, 4th Floor, NY, NY). Two paintings from the same
series ‘Tile 3 (blue)’ and ‘Tile 8 (orange)’
are included in the Burning Butterfly exhibition. The tile paintings
are energetic and dynamic, exploring the boundaries and characteristics
of foreground and background. In ‘tile 3’ areas of cobalt
blue interact with grayscale polymorphic forms. ‘Tile 8’
is a canvas packed with vigorous orange lines and thick white paint.
In February of this year, M exhibited six paintings in Concept
Management Group’s (CMG) “Winter Wonder 2003”,
at the Eickholt Gallery in SoHo. Brad Gishen, show curator, stated
"I believe MG has immense talent, her work is bright, beautiful
and definitely sensual.” ‘Negative Space 2’, previously
shown with CMG, is included in the current show. This painting blocks
out the figures in white and explores the energy between two women
in sky blues with hints of violet and wispy whites.
‘Lightning’ is a night seascape bisected by a single
dynamic bolt (from ‘The Mummies of Guanajuato’, solo
exhibition at the Modern Art Gallery of Guadalajara, Mexico, June
2001). ‘Ice’ is a recent work of subterranean blues
and lush whites inspired by M’s trip to Alaska.
Burning Butterfly Gallery is owned and operated by Deshawn Marie.
The inaugural reception will include live music by Sweetsop, JazzCamp
and Craig Stephen with refreshments provided by The Spot Tavern.
MG: Mini-Retrospective will be on view from June 5 – June
29, 2003. Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 1pm - 8pm, Sunday 4pm
- 8pm. The gallery may be contacted at (201) 422-0744.
